DARK SKY PARK
Easan is in the Dark Sky Park, where you can see some of the darkest, most pristine skies in the world. It has received the Gold Tier standard as a Dark Sky Park.
It is recognised as one of the best places in the world to see thousands of twinkling stars and planets, as well as the Milky Way and even meteor showers.
From time to time, it’s possible also to see the Aurora Borealis.
You can sky watch in front of the cottage, or you can walk down the road towards the Owenduff for an even greater experience.
Don’t forget to bring a rug and a thermos.
LEISURE CLUB SPA AND POOL:
In Mulranny park hotel, there is a Leisure Club which has a 20 metre indoor pool and fully equipped gym; you can also have a Seaweed bath and massage.
SHOPPING:
Foxford Woollen Mills in Foxford is about 1 hour drive from Easan; with beautiful throws and clothes and souvenirs as well as being a great place for lunch or tea.
The Beehive on Achill Island (close to Keel Bay) is also a great shop and restaurant.
The Wild Nephin National Park
Easan lies deep within the Nephin park, which covers 15,000 hectares of unspoilt wilderness.
The cottage is in the Owenduff bog, which is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in Western Europe.
As such, it holds many other important habitats and species such as otters, deer, grouse, upland grasslands and many others.
At the Visitors centre, you will find lots of information and maps, as well as learning experiences for children. There is also a Café/restaurant with homemade food and the opportunity to buy souvenirs.
Having the possibility of walking freely in the park, straight out of the door, is a very special experience. You can follow the maps but also just roam freely (obviously paying attention to the habitats, bog holes and ponds etc). There is a very detailed map in the cottage at your disposal and there are other signposted walks indicated in the Visitors centre, such as the Bangor Trail, where you can follow in the footsteps of cattle and sheep herders. The Owenduff river itself is just at the end of our track, and you can paddle in the river and even swim. If you cross the river, you may reach an old, abandoned cottage with traces of stone enclosures and a famous old “Yggdrasil” tree.
FISHING:
There is excellent salmon and sea trout fishing on the Owenduff river which runs close to Easan at specific times of the year; in Spring, from early February, in June for sea trout and in the autumn.
Fishing can be organised via the Rock house fishery, day tickets are available and you also need an Irish state fishing licence.
SURFING:
There is very good surfing on Achill island at Keel beach, about 35 minutes drive. There is also a secret spot at Dumhach Bheag, just west of Mulranny, around 15 minutes drive, but only under certain conditions!
BEACHES:
The beautiful sandy beaches of Mulranny/Polranny beaches on Clew Bay are very close to Easan, great for wave jumping and swimming as well as wind surfing.
The world famous Keem bay is not far away on Achill island, and on Achill you also have Keel Bay and Doogort bay, not to mention the Golden Strand.
BIKES:
You can ride along the Great Western Greenway which takes you from Mulranny to Achill island or down to Westport. Bikes can be hired at multiple places including Mulranny.
